Should visitors to Egypt be scared of a Muslim Brotherhood President?

A short while ago I would have said yes but not now, not now I have met them. The first action of our Muslim Brotherhood MP Dr Dardery was to ask to meet ex-pats living in Luxor. He wanted to address any concerns we had. He spoke eloquently, he engaged, he listened and he welcomed uncovered foreign women and shook their hands.

Recently the Muslim Brotherhood Presidential Candidate held a rally in Luxor. I was personally invited to attend. It was suggest I videoed it and before the meeting Dr Dardery asked if there were any questions I had. During the meeting when I indicated I had a question to ask, the mike was given to me almost immediately. I asked my question in English and it was answered in English. Think about that, I haven’t got a vote, I am foreign, female and not dressed from head to toe in black. Morsi said in response to my question that foreigners were welcome in Egypt for as long as they wanted to stay, all their lives if they wanted. See http://luxor-news.blogspot.com/2012/05/luxor-presidential-election-rally-for.html

Now of course all politicians, the world over, will say things before they are elected and it is not until they are in power you see their true colours but I don’t think any tourist coming to Egypt is going to be affected. With the majority of the population living on under $2 a day, clean water, education, employment, healthcare are going to be the priorities and all efforts are going to be funnelled in that direction. To make changes they need the tourist dollar so the only slogan a tourist will hear is ‘Welcome to Egypt’.

Thank you Jane.

I would go to Egypt at a drop of a hat- with no worries of concern over my own safety.However- my attitute changes when i think of visiting with my wife, daughter and son. I have to be certain of their safety.

I am pleased to hear your experiences have been so positive. Do keep us up to date- as things change in politics.

The initial feedback is extremely positive and should be encouraged.

Since the revolution I have had over a 100 sets of guests, some have travelled through middle Egypt nobody has had any problems at all. In my opinion tourists have no need to worry :)
