An unidentified royal statue head found in Luxor - Ancient Egypt - Heritage - Ahram Online

An unidentified royal statue head found in Luxor - Ancient Egypt - Heritage - Ahram Online

There are a number of inaccuracies in this story, including the location of the temple. Miriam's team is the one working on the temple by the road, which is large and just along from the Ramasseum for a start! She has also told me privately that........
"Preliminary studies indicate that could be the head of the statue of a deity or a private official. Future research will provide more information about its origin and meaning".

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year (and big, big thanks) | Jane Akshar

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year (and big, big thanks) | Jane Akshar

Happy Christmas from Jane, Mahmoud and all at Flats in Luxor.
This year has been hugely challenging for us, at times I didn’t think we would make it through the year. Our tourism business has reduced to almost zero. We have reduced costs where we could but have managed to keep 3 members of staff; Little Mohamed, Hajaj and Mohamed at Goubli. All our other people we had to let go. By moving in members of the family we cover Goubli and the Village at night and Mahmoud’s father looks after Gezera. However other costs we have had to pay like water, electricity, internet and phone, hugely challenging at times. The article in Take a Break paid a big electricity bill, thank God. Book sales totalled nearly £800 for the year, that was a huge help so please continue to share about my books.
But the biggest help has been generous friends who sent us money, we literally could not have lived without this. My insulin costs are enormous by Egyptian standards and no way would we have been able to cover them with these generous gifts. We thank you all so much.
On a personal front my beautiful daughter has married her Syrian cousin and moved to Damascus. A serious worrying situation but she is as happy as a sand boy and enjoying her new family.
We hope and pray that 2014 is a better year for us and all in Egypt, please do encourage your friends to visit the country. Everyone who has come has had a wonderful time, no problems or worries and of course, please encourage them to stay with us.

Snow in Egypt

An updated photo, a camel at St Catherine's, Sinai, can you believe it!!!!!!!

This photo of snow in Cairo has just stunned me. Apparently the first snow in OVER 100 hundred years. It is very cold in Luxor too but if we get snow here I will faint!

2nd meeting with the Governor

Just got back from a great meeting with the governor. He went over what he had achieved in his first three months and his plans for the future.

Getting the travel warnings raised, the one year tourist visa and lots of high power meetings and conferences.

He definitely wants a better Luxor, investment in light/eco friendly manufacturing to take away the dependency on tourism. He is trying to get Emirate investment for that. High quality cultural evening events, it was most encouraging. Well done his Excellency

Mandarins are in season

On the way to the airport today I saw a road side shop selling my favourite fruit. Known in the Arab world as Yusuf Effendi. Do you know why, read below

Egypt: Another profitable development was the cultivation and large scale export of the mandarin, a fruit introduced by Yusuf al-Armani. Yusuf Effendi al-Armani, bought and brought with him mandarin saplings from the Island of Malta, and planted it in Muhammed Ali’s orchard. The fruit became popular and its production was so lucrative that it was named Yusuf Effendi after the enterprising Armenian who introduced it.

uxor African Film Festival مهرجان الأقصر للسينما الأفريقية‎
The Board of Trustees of the Luxor African Film Festival has decided to honour the great artist Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, for lifetime achievement, and a rich and distinctive artistic career at the service of the Egyptian film industry
Mahmoud Abdel Aziz has welcomed the honour which will be staged during the opening ceremony of the third edition of the festival on March 18, 2014 at one of the magnificent temples in Luxor. Among the events planned to honour the star there will be a spectacular ritual-like Pharaonic event whereby homage will be paid to the Egyptian star in the way the high-priests of Ancient Egypt were.
In line with its own tradition, LAFF 2014 will honour also one of the great representatives of Sub-Saharan African cinema. In its previous two editions, LAFF has paid homage to Malian filmmaker and director Souleymane Cissé, Egyptian actress Yousra, Moustapha Allassane, the Nigerien pioneer of Animation, Hailé Gerima, the internationally renowned Ethiopian filmmaker and last but not least Dawood Abdel Sayed, the Egyptian film director
The Luxor African Film Festival is organized by the Youth Foundation with the support of independent artists and the Egyptian Ministries of Culture, Foreign Affairs, Tourism, Youth, and the National Bank of Egypt, in collaboration with the Governorate of Luxor and the Egyptian Filmmakers Syndicate.
