Egypt reopens tomb as tourism falls - The Art Newspaper

 Exciting!!!!!!

Egypt reopens tomb as tourism falls - The Art Newspaper: Egypt plans to reopen the royal tomb of Nefertari, a wife of Ramesses II (who reigned from 1279BC to 1213BC), on a regular basis after it was closed for eight years because of concerns over the condition of the site’s wall paintings.

The burial site in the Valley of the Queens was opened for ten days in mid-October to celebrate the 110th anniversary of its discovery by the Italian archaeologist Ernesto Schiaparelli. Speaking at an event in London last month, Egypt’s minister of tourism, Hisham Zazou, proposed that the site remains open. “I want to make sure [this period] is expanded, so it is open every month,” Zazou said, adding that the tomb would be open one week a month to a limited number of tourists. Access was restricted to 150 visitors before it was closed in 2006.

I must admit I have always suspected that area north of Karnak was potential the source of interesting things as the ground level was 2-3 foot above the path and flooring.

Profile - Airbnb: Jane was an amazing host. She went out of her way to help our group and arranged an outstanding and very reasonable private dinner for us on the rooftop terrace. Her place is located in a secluded area of Luxor and was quite peaceful. We were very sorry to not be able to stay for longer. I highly recommend staying at her place for a few days. Thanks again Jane!!!

Here the light is raw - an exhibition by Christophe Brogliolo

This Thursday 4th December at 6pm there is an opening of exhibition of pinhole photography at the Marsam Hotel. I met up with Christophe today for a sneak preview and he told me about himself.

Here are some of the photographs.

He uses a pinhole camera now as it happens I knew what he was talking about as I took my daughter to the Fox Talbot museum over a decade ago and we made a pinhole camera and took some photos and developed them. Christophe and I had a discussion and he told me about the Frenchman Nicéphore Niépce - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia  and I told him about Henry Fox Talbot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia . So do have a read to learn about this early technique.

There is a buffet available after the opening for 60LE but you need to book 01003426471 The exhibition will be open for one month.

State Information Services Antiquities Minister visits Luxor: Minister of Antiquities Mamdouh el-Damati paid a visit to the Upper Egypt governorate of Luxor on Saturday 22/11/2014, to inspect a number of archaeological projects there.

In press statements, Damati stressed the importance of such visits to encourage work and remove any obstacles.

He inspected the restoration of Amenhotep III Museum, asserting that his visits also aim at following up restoration works of Egypt's antiquities.

I suspect the article is referring to the excavations behind the colossus as there is no Amenhotep III museum

Ancient Egyptian Mummy Wearing Jewels Found : Discovery News: Spanish archaeologists digging in Egypt have unearthed a female mummy still wearing her jewels.

The mummy was discovered in the necropolis below the temple of Pharaoh Thutmosis III (1490-1436 B.C.), on the west bank of the Nile in Luxor (southern Egypt). The find dates to the Middle Kingdom (2137-1781 B.C.).

For nearly four millennia, the “Lady of the Jewels,” as the mummy was nicknamed, eluded tomb raiders, her sarcophagus trapped under a collapsed roof.

The Spanish mission directed by Dr. Myriam Seco Álvarez
has discovered two MK tombs below the Mortuary Temple of Thutmosis III in
Luxor. One of the tombs contained an undisturbed sarcophagus with the mummy of
a woman and a collection of gold and silver jewelery.

Gebel el Silsila Survey Project: A new season!: A new season!
The Gebel el Silsila Survey Team is back on site for yet another, hopefully, great season's work.

Work this season includes some new exciting features, such as 3D-scanning, GIS recording and the setting up of a proper archaeo-geographic gridwork for the first time, and of course the continuation of our previous recording including Sarah's pottery analysis, John's study into extraction methods and transportation, Maria's project on quarry marks and petroglyphs, Philippe's epigraphic work on Egyptological matters, as well as the documentation of prehistoric rock art sites and lithic industries. This season we are also delighted to have with us the splendid Egyptian scholar Moamen Saad, who is currently collating material for his doctoral thesis on the Nile Stelae here at Silsila. Of course, this season brings also another member; one who has become famous among most of you already - Lady Freja! She expresses her warmest gratefulness to her favorite friends of the Petrie Museum for bringing her some most wonderful gifts! We also give a warm welcome to Mohamed Ibrahim as our inspector!

Keeping this post short (another one will be posted by John tomorrow, giving you a description of our first week on site, including some prominent visits by TARA (Trust for African Rock Art) as well as Friends of the Petrie Museum and the Plymouth Egyptological group), we wish to welcome you once more to join us here virtually on our work at Silsila!

Welcome to the Missione Archeologica Canario Toscana

Flats in Luxor is very excited to welcome the Min Project team who are working at TT109. They have a very good website where you can read up on their work and maybe sponsor them.

Missione Archeologica Canario Toscana > Home

Min Project is an Italian-Spanish
project in co-operation with Egypt, born for the study and publication
of a Theban Tomb (TT109 and its extension Kampp -327-) in the Necropolis
of Thebes, on the west bank of the city of Luxor.
The tomb of Min (TT109) has not been
systematically studied and has never been recorded or examined in
detail. Many early travelers -Champollion, Burton and Rosellini among
them - copied many of the scenes and inscriptions, some of which are now
gone, but a complete publication was never done. Modern systematic
recording of the monument began in 1887-1889 but it was without the
advantages of color photography and modern recording techniques. Sadly,
through the years, tomb TT109 has suffered intermittent vandalism and
has been subject to erosion that endangers its carved decorations, some
of which are crumbling.
The purpose of the “Min Project” is to copy and study the inscriptions
and the scenes and to document the architecture, as well as to clean and
conserve the structure of the tomb and its wall decorations and to
prepare the monument for a future opening for the public.

Tutankhamun had girlish hips, a club foot and buck teeth according to a 'virtual autopsy' | Daily Mail Online

I must admit I despaired reading this load of rubbish and am eternally grateful to Dylan Bikerstaf for this response posted in the Facebook group Forensic Egyptology. "Dylan Bickerstaffe More
rubbish based on that utterly flawed DNA study, and some highly
speculative interpretations of CAT scans. If you believe the study they
did, virtually every person they examined (they claimed they were all
kings and queens - they weren't!) had scoliosis, kyphoscoliosis, club
foot, incisional hernia. Suspicious? These are all mummies, not natural
deaths. I see they're still trotting out the idea that Tutankhamun's
parents were Akhenaten and an otherwise unknown daughter of Amenhotep
III. Not likely! The DNA actually showed that the KV55 mummy was
extremely UNLIKELY to be Akhenaten. See the analysis done by Kate
Phizackerley at
www.KV64.info. Contact her through egyptological on-line magazine."
