Walking Tours with Mohammed Ismail

Several of my guests have recently been walking with the delightful gentleman Mohammed Ismail. I was first introduce to him by Richard Sellicks and those of you that have seen Richards photos of obscure and remote sites and wondered how he got them, wonder no more. it was Mohammed. I have recommended him to others and he has featured in blogs lie this http://ancientcivilization-geology.blogspot.com/2007/02/hike-with-mohammed.html If you go walking you are always going to be accosted by locals and this can be irritating. The best way to stop this is to hire someone who knows the hills and has a decent grasp of Egyptology, that is where Mohammed comes in.

He is a proper Old Gurna local who used to live in a tomb as you can see in this video. He scraps a living sell souvenirs at the Valley of Nobles so you really help if you use him to go walking.

Richard says "Fort Qasr Al Dush (if I have got it right) in the Kharga Oasis. First time Don and I went to Kharga we saw this fort on a hill a little off from the road, we went to investigate and to our surprise there was a temple within."

My trusty Baedecker says "In the extreme south of the Kharga Oasis lies the large village of Baris. South West of which by way of El-Maks is Qasr Dush (ancient Cysis) with a large temple of the Roman Imperial period dedicated to Serpis and Isis."

This is an interesting set of photos as although I have been to El Kab several times I have never been able to get inside the walled part. Richard says

Here a more unusual set for you the walled city at El Kab, there are two temples here I believe one dedicated to Nekhbet the other Sobek and Thoth.

Richard has spoiled us with over 30 pictures of the tomb, for more details of the tomb I recommend the Theban Mapping Project website. Richard is a friend and guest at Flats in Luxor who has been coming to Luxor for decades. His photos were taken in the days when this was allowed, you can't even take your camera in the Valley these days.
