Stupid, stupid, stupid. I just read the news about this on Andie's blog (http://egyptology.blogspot.com/) and as I expected people have already dropped plans to visit Egypt due to this hassle.

I didn't know that Egypt doesn't have an embassy in New Zealand. There must be more cases like that. What do you do? Even if you could, would you mail your passport to an embassy in another country? This is just one more hurdle for the tourists that Egypt needs.

I honestly don't see how this has anything to do with sovereignty. Being able to get a visa at the airport was convenient, and although still a way to get more money from the tourists, at least it wasn't too much, $20 or $25 if I remember correctly. My mother and niece were just in Germany for a few weeks an never had to worry about a visa.
